If Wishes Could Kill Review: Can Someone Pass Me A Midol And A Therapist

This k-drama horrified me, not just scared me, it fueled my nightmares incessantly after watching it. The jump scares, graphic sound effects, and constant suspense genuinely got under my skin and left me tense long after every episode ended. I probably shouldn’t have watched this late at night like I did until 1 AM and then immediately fallen asleep afterward, because I ended up having to put on The Big Bang Theory just to calm down enough to sleep. You always have to put on something funny after a horror like this or the creepy atmosphere follows you straight into bed.

I honestly have to say this was one of the best horror k-dramas I have ever watched, and it reminded me so much of those 2000s horror movies which really are my bread and butter. As a millennial girl, I grew up loving ‘90s and 2000s horror, and this k-drama captured that exact feeling where a group of friends have to slowly piece together clues to stop something evil before it destroys everyone around them.

If Wishes Could Kill follows a group of high school friends become entangled with a mysterious app that grants wishes, but every wish comes with a terrifying cost. As strange deaths begin surrounding them, the friends are pulled into a suspenseful supernatural mystery where they must uncover the truth behind the curse before they become its next victims.

This k-drama feels like someone took a cursed 2000s horror movie, turned the suspense up to 100, and refused to let you breathe.

This drama really lived up to its name because it never slowed down for a second. The storyline was fast-paced, creepy, and genuinely suspenseful, while still managing to have quirky moments between the horror. The jump scares were actually effective, and from the very first episode the graphic nature of the show almost makes you want to look away at times.

It honestly reminded me of reading a romance book where even if a few details do not fully make sense or the grammar is messy at times, the story itself is still so addictive that you cannot stop turning the pages. That is exactly how this k-drama felt for me. There were definitely a couple of things I could not stop thinking about afterward, though. The drama is mostly set around 2005/2008, so the idea of a curse spreading through smartphones felt a little strange considering smartphones barely existed back then. There was also another plot point that bothered me, but I will not spoil it here. I just kept wondering if anyone else watching thought of one particular thing that realistically could have stopped the entire curse. If anybody can guess in the comments, I will note it. 🙂

The cinematography was also genuinely incredible and gave me that nostalgic early-2000s horror atmosphere, except now everything is sharper, darker, and filmed in beautiful HD. Really great.

Oh, and by the way, if you watch this drama, “Saju” basically refers to the “Four Pillars,” which is a traditional Korean form of fortune-telling based on your birth year, month, day, and time. It is believed those four elements shape your destiny and life path. Thank me later.
