What made episode 1 special: The parasite takeover in the nightclub was one of the most memorable openings I've seen. It was intense from the start, set the tone perfectly, and made it impossible not to continue to Episode 2.

Would I recommend: Yes! Double yes! This drama is intense, suspenseful, and packed with memorable moments. The storyline kept me invested from start to finish. Just be aware that it contains some gore.. You can check out my review of the show here.

What made episode 1 special: The first episode immediately immersed me in Joo Kyung's life and the struggles she faced in high school. Her first meeting with Lee Su-ho felt magical and set the stage for one of my favorite K-drama romances. By the end of the episode, I was completely hooked and eager to see what would happen next. Even years later, it remains one of my favorite dramas to rewatch.

  1. The Uncanny Counter

The Uncanny Counter, Netflix
The Uncanny Counter, Netflix

What made episode 1 special: The first episode is a real hook. It quickly introduces So Mun, his tragic past, and the supernatural team known as the Counters. The action moves fast, the powers are exciting, and the introduction of Ji Cheong-sin immediately grabs your attention. He remains one of my favorite villains of all time, and Lee Hong-nae was absolutely born to play that role. Watching So Mun gain his powers and discover this hidden world made it impossible not to continue watching. You can check out my review for the show here.

Would I recommend: Absolutely yes! The first season is one of my favorites. I genuinely believe every director should watch this show. It is a masterpiece when it comes to character psychology, emotional depth, and warmth. The characters feel real, the villains are memorable, and the story never loses its heart... at least until Season 2.

  1. All of Us Are Dead

All of Us Are Dead, Netflix
All of Us Are Dead, Netflix

What made episode 1 special: The first episode did an excellent job building tension. From the very beginning, you knew something terrible was about to happen, and when it finally did, it did not disappoint. The suspense kept building until everything exploded into chaos. It was intense, nerve-racking, and at times genuinely terrifying. To this day, I still consider All of Us Are Dead one of the best zombie K-dramas I have ever seen. Can't wait for season 2!

Would I recommend: Yes, absolutely! This is one of those rare dramas that keeps the intensity high from Episode 1 all the way to the finale. You never know what is going to happen next, and I found myself constantly rooting for the characters. Also, running zombies? Come on. those are always the scariest zombies.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty, Netflix

What made episode 1 special: The first episode was an absolute delight. The banter and chemistry between the main leads were magnetic from the very beginning, and the heroine's confusion after suddenly finding herself in Joseon led to some genuinely hilarious moments. The energy between the characters made every interaction fun to watch, and I was completely hooked by the end of the episode. While I did not enjoy the rest of the drama nearly as much as the opening, Episode 1 remains one of the most memorable first episodes I have seen. You can check out my review of the drama here.

Would I recommend: No, not personally. While I loved the first episode and thought it was one of the strongest openings I have seen, the rest of the drama did not work for me. That said, if you enjoy time-travel romances, historical settings, and fish-out-of-water comedy, it may be worth checking out for yourself.

  1. Mr. Queen

Mr. Queen, Netflix
Mr. Queen, Netflix

What made episode 1 special: Mr. Queen was fun right from the very beginning. The idea of a flirty modern chef suddenly waking up in Joseon in the Queen's body is hilarious on its own, but the execution made it even better. Watching him try to figure out what was happening, where he was, and how he ended up in this situation led to some genuinely funny moments. The episode never slowed down, and even the opening theme was memorable and fun. By the end of the episode, I was completely hooked and ready for more.

Would I recommend: Yes! This is one of the most entertaining time-travel K-dramas I have watched. It is funny, charming, and never takes itself too seriously. You will laugh, enjoy the drama, and probably end up craving some of the food along the way. If you are looking for a fun historical K-drama with a unique premise, Mr. Queen is an easy recommendation.

  1. Sweet Home

Sweet Home, Netflix
Sweet Home, Netflix

What made episode 1 special: I think Sweet Home has one of the fastest hooks in horror K-drama history. The idea of residents trapped inside an apartment building while terrifying monsters begin taking over is enough to grab your attention immediately. One of my favorite scenes is when Cha Hyun-soo watches the chaos unfold through the intercom. You see this depressed and isolated teenager suddenly forced to face a nightmare beyond anything he could have imagined. The tension, mystery, and horror pulled me in right away, and I could not wait to see what would happen next. You can find season 2 review here and season 3 review here.

Would I recommend: Yes, absolutely! This is one of my favorite horror K-dramas, especially Season 1. It keeps you hooked from beginning to end as you watch humanity either come together or tear itself apart in the face of disaster. I found myself rooting for Hyun-soo the entire time, along with many of the other residents trapped inside the building. This is a must-watch for horror fans. I also believe this is Song Kang's best performance.

  1. The Penthouse

The Penthouse, Netflix
The Penthouse, Netflix

What made episode 1 special: The opening fireworks scene is one I have never forgotten. It is explosive, shocking, and instantly fills you with questions. Watching the events unfold while the mystery slowly takes shape was incredibly effective, and by the end of the episode I had to know what happened and who was responsible. In my opinion, it is one of the strongest openings I have seen in a K-drama. The first episode grabbed me immediately and never let go.

To be completely honest, this incredible opening did not make up for some of the things that frustrated me later in the series, including the bratty kids, over-the-top melodrama, annoying characters, and increasingly ridiculous behavior. Still, when it comes to first episodes, The Penthouse absolutely deserves a spot on this list.

Would I recommend: Yes, especially Season 1. The mystery, suspense, and shocking twists kept me invested, and the opening episode remains one of the best I have seen. That said, the show does have some setbacks. If you can embrace the chaos, there is a lot of entertainment to be found here.

  1. If Wishes Could Kill

If Wishes Could Kill, Netflix
If Wishes Could Kill, Netflix

What made episode 1 special: The opening episode is shocking, gory, and honestly a little insane. It wastes no time showing viewers exactly what kind of story they are getting into. The intensity never lets up, and every new scene somehow manages to become even more disturbing than the last. I watched through the night because I simply could not stop. I honestly cannot remember the last time a drama kept me glued to the screen like that. It is one of the most intense, edge-of-your-seat horror openings I have ever seen, and I even had nightmares afterward. If a first episode can leave that kind of impression, it has done something right. You can check out my review of the drama here.

Would I recommend: Yes, definitely! Just be prepared for a horror experience you will not soon forget.

  1. Squid Game

Squid Game, Netflix
Squid Game, Netflix

What made episode 1 special: The first episode introduced viewers to Seong Gi-hun and his difficult life before throwing him into one of the most shocking television episodes I have ever seen. The Red Light, Green Light game completely changed everything. What started as a strange competition suddenly became a fight for survival, and from that moment on I knew this was going to be a special and unique show unlike anything I had seen before. The suspense, shock, and sheer unpredictability of the episode made it impossible not to continue watching.

Would I recommend: Yes! If you have not seen Squid Game yet, go watch it. The first episode alone earns its place on this list. Just be prepared for some bloody moments, because this show does not hold back. The suspense, mystery, and shocking twists make it an unforgettable watch.
