After conducting a poll on which K-drama I should watch next, "Twinkling Watermelon" emerged victorious. And what a delightful journey it has been! This enchanting series, which aired from September 25 to November 14, 2023, on tvN, brought back the whimsical charm reminiscent of "Hotel del Luna," wrapped in the youthful exuberance of a coming-of-age story.
At its core, "Twinkling Watermelon" follows Ha Eun-gyeol (portrayed by the talented Ryeoun), a high school student leading a double life. By day, he's the epitome of a model student, but by night, he transforms into a passionate guitarist. The plot thickens when Eun-gyeol stumbles upon a mystical music store that whisks him back to 1995, allowing him to meet his father as a young adult. This journey through time intricately weaves elements of friendship, family dynamics, and the inevitable consequences of life's choices.
I enjoyed watching "Twinkling Watermelon", it was an entertaining watch. It makes you wonder, what you would do if thrown back in time.
It is not often that a series manages to capture the essence of nostalgia and the exhilaration of youth so well. The performances of Ryeoun and Choi Hyun-Wook were standout, each bringing a distinct flavor to the show that made their characters memorable and relatable.
However, despite my overall enjoyment, I found myself occasionally skipping ahead through certain episodes. The pacing felt a tad slow at times, which is noteworthy considering I'm no stranger to dramas of this length. This aspect made some parts seem longer than necessary, though it didn't detract from the overall charm and appeal of the series.
"Twinkling Watermelon" is a must-watch for those who yearn for a story that combines the magic of time travel with the trials and tribulations of growing up. It's a series that not only entertains but also invites viewers to reflect on their own life choices and the paths not taken. Though it may have benefitted from tighter pacing, the journey it offers is undeniably heartwarming and thoroughly enjoyable.
I would definitely recommend it as a seasoned K-drama fan.
